Best Ever...Yeah Right!!!

I was drinking the Kool-aid on Peyton Manning. As much as I hate the Blueberry flavor, I had my big glass sitting next to me as I watched the Super Bowl on Sunday night (BTW...how did only 35% of the country watch the game, what is wrong with you people?). I was ready to come on here and say Peyton Manning was the greatest quarterback to ever play in the National Football League. His regular season speaks for itself, and now he would have 2 Super Bowl rings and probably 2 Super Bowl MVP's. He's the best, no doubt about it!!!

Please don't mistake what I am saying, I love watching Manning play during the regular season, he is the GREATEST QUARTERBACK TO EVER PLAY THE GAME, until January 1. These things did not come out because I like bashing Manning. I have said these things for years. In private conversations that all of you were just not ready to hear. So congratulations, today you all become grown ups and you get the truth. I just hope all of you are ready to for this...

However, on Sunday night instead of becoming Tom Brady or Joe Montana, Peyton Manning became, well Peyton Manning (it was hard not to put Brett Favre's name here). In a game everyone fully expected them to win (not me, but the rest of you did), with his team counting on him to drive them down and score a game tying touchdown, Manning with one terrible throw sealed the win for the Saints. That leads me to ask this question, how does someone so good with nothing on the line become so bad when it matters the most. Yes, I realize that he had a good game. I realize his numbers were better than Drew Brees, well except for number of interceptions and touchdowns (although that is not fair, he threw the same number of touchdowns, he just spread them around a little more evenly than Drew Brees). What is it about the post season that causes the best regular season qb to become mediocre at best. I can see the disgusted look on your faces now, "mediocre at best, no way". Today we will play a little game I like to call Inside the Numbers. Let's Play, shall we...

Peyton Manning is 9 - 9 in the postseason. By comparison Tom Brady is 14 - 4, Joe Montana was 14 - 4 during his 1st 18 playoff games, John Elway was 11 - 7, Brett Favre was 11 - 7, only Dan Marino's 8 - 10 record is worse than that of Peyton Manning.

Please spare me the Peyton Manning played on worse teams than these guys, HE HAS MORE REGULAR SEASON WINS DURING THIS DECADE THAN ANY OF THESE OTHER QUARTERBACKS HAD DURING ANY DECADE!!! This decade, 5 times the Colts had a better regular season record than the Patriots, compared to only 4 times for the Patriots (one year they tied with 12 wins). Patriots 3 Super Bowl rings, Colts one. Brady has an undefeated season, Manning does not. The one season Brady played with offensive talent like what Manning has played with his ENTIRE CAREER, Brady broke single season records, they were held by Manning if you are curious. You can only blame it on the team until you actually look at the numbers and so the research. This is becoming obvious, it's not a case of bad teams, IT IS bad play from the single most important position in sports.

Individual numbers don't help Manning's cause either. The only one of the quarterbacks mentioned who have less touchdowns during their 1st 18 playoff games is John Elway (Brady and Manning are tied with 28, but Manning has thrown more interceptions). If you take Denver away from Peyton Manning, he has just been downright terrible in the playoffs. He has 28 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, Denver has given up 9 of those touchdowns in 2 games while only picking Manning off once. That means in the 17 playoff games against opponents other than Denver, Manning's touchdowns to interceptions numbers are 19 - 18. This is from a guy who is the leader of his team. He is responsible for making that team go.

Let's call him what he is...Jim Kelly!

You remember Jim Kelly, the leader of all of those Bills teams. They lit it up against the weak AFC teams, but when the going got tough and they played elite opponents in the Super Bowl, they could not match up. I realize that Manning got his Super Bowl and so that puts him a notch above Jim Kelly, but please someone explain to me how a team that has won more regular season games in the last decade...MORE THAN BRADY, MORE THAN ROTHELISBURGER, MORE THAN ANY OTHER QB IN HISTORY, has only been able to get 1 ring. I will tell you why, the Colts are led by a guy, who when he is needed more than ever, can not come through. It started back an Tennessee (please don't tell me about how he was on bad teams, THEY WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THE YEAR AFTER HE LEFT WITH TEE MARTIN!).
I was surprised at how the win loss numbers played out when it came to his playoff record. He has been equally mediocre through all of the playoff rounds. He is 2 - 2 in the wild card round, 3 - 4 in the divisional round, 2 - 1 in AFC championship games, and 1 - 1 in Super Bowls. Let's call these numbers what they are, the numbers of a very mediocre quarterback.

I am not saying I like it, but quarterbacks are judge on total team success. For Peyton Manning more than anyone else, because of the fact that team is built around and for him, this is fair. And when you look at it, everything other than his name and regular season numbers say he is a mediocre quarterback while the likes of Brady and Montana were coming through in clutch situations.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions.

Until next time...

All about Payton...

The New Orleans Saints have been through so much over the last four years. But, I am not going to talk about that. If you want to read some feel good story about a team and a city becoming one and the joy they have because of the success that the team is enjoying go somewhere else. This night belonged to Peyton. You know the guy who was going to take his place among football royalty. He was going to become the best quarterback of his generation. This was Peyton's night.

Somewhere along the way though this night became less about Peyton, and more about Payton. As in Sean Payton. Sean Payton is the coach who for one magical night in Miami coached as close to perfect game as any coach could have. There is not one decision that you look at and say "what was he thinking?" If you look at what the Saints coaching staff did in preparing their team for this game and making adjustments throughout the game, you will find a team who was prepared and played to their strengths. They did not let the COlts dictate what they would or would not do. The more I watched the game on Sunday night, the more obvious it became the biggest mismatch in this game was the difference in coaching staffs. You can question Jim Caldwell's decision to rest starters, but that had NO IMPACT ON THIS GAME!!! It does however, show a pattern of passiveness that will hurt the Colts in the future. What we did learn on Sunday night was that Sean Payton knows that you must be aggressive to win in the NFL and he is not afraid to go for it. He made the necessary adjustments when they needed to be made. The Colts took away the run and the Saints ran just enough to keep the Colts honest. Freeney came out playing well (to my surprise), and they started chipping and doubling him. Manning was not going deep, so they brought the safeties up some on and made Manning work harder on thethrows he made (he made some BEAUTIFUL throws). Sean Payton showed everyone how to coach a big time game.

What we found out was in big time situations you can not count on Peyton, but PAYTON will be prepared and get the job done.

Congrats Saints!!!

URGENT --- CORRECTION FROM EARLIER

I must apologize for my earlier posting. I made the mistake of saying Peyton Manning was the best quarterback of this generation. I placed an * next to that statement because he is the best quarterback of this generation not named Tom Brady. I was going to post this at the bottom of the article, and I forgot to mention it. I felt the need to clear this misunderstanding up. Make no mistake about it, I still believe that Tom Brady is the best quarterback of this generation and I do not believe that tonight in Miami will change that. I may be wrong and Manning may pull this game out and be impressive in doing it, but I don't think so. I am sorry for the mistake and for those Manning people out there, I am sorry to have to ruin your hopes of thinking that he was the best quarterback of our generation.

BTW...you will not need to post anything telling me how right I am about Brady being better than Manning, after Manning loses the game tonight. I already know I am right.

And the winner is...

Today is the day we have all been waiting for. In April everyone thought their team had just drafted the missing link to make their team a favorite for the Super Bowl. September comes along and it's time for kick off on another season filled with promise. It all led us to this day. The New Orleans Saints battling the Indianapolis Colts for the title of Super Bowl Champion. Before I go on record with my pick, let me tell you the strenght and weakness of each team.

Indianoplis Colts - they have not lost a game all year they tried to win. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the decision to rest the starters, it clearly did not hurt them this year and WILL NOT be the reason they WIN OR LOSE tonight in Miami. The key for the Colts is the same as it has been sine game one of the 1998 season, Peyton Manning must play well. Peyton Manning is the best quarterback of this generation of quarterbacks* and if he does not play well, this will be a painfully long day for Colts fans. The key to this game for Colts is Manning's ability to figure out what the Saints are doing with the blitz. Gregg Williams does a great job of showing blitz from one side or with a certain player and drop them back into coverage. If Manning is able to read the "truth" about who is coming, they will score and score often.
Defensively, I have spent the last week listening to ESPN guys tell us how we are missing the boat on this defense. "They are fast and underated" they keep saying. Yes, I realize they are fast, but let's be honest they are not as fast as the offensive weapons for the Saints. I realize that the Colts have only given up more than 17 points in 5 games this year, but the teams that have troubled them and been able to be in a position to beat them are teams with the abibility to spread them a\out and throw on them. I do believe the defense will be a liability in Miami and I also believe this is the defense that Manning and the rest of that offense should be worrying about.

New Orleans Saints - Offensively the Saints are just as good as the Colts, maybe even better. The number of weapons that Drew Brees has to play with is unfair. They spread you out with a 3 or 4 wideout set or they can go power I with Pierre Thomas. I really think where the Saints have a HUGE mismatch is with Reggie Bush. He is the type of game breaker that could easily change the outcome of this game. The biggest key for Sean Peyton and the Saints will be moving him around and creating mismatches in coverage. By moving Bush to the outside, you force the Colts to move a safety into coverage and that will leave the middle of the field wide open for deep play action passes. Brees sells the play action as well as anyone (obviously Peyton is still the best). The Saints must keep Brees upright, a job that does seem to be getting easier with the fact that Dwight Freeney seems like he will be less than 100%. If the Colts can't get pressure with their front 4 then Brees will pick apart that secondary and will have a huge day throwing the ball.
Defensively, it all comes down to pressuring Manning. If the Saints get pressure on Manning like they did Favre, they will win. Manning has been known to struggle against physical defenses who are not afraid to bring the house, which the Saints are known for. I know people say this team has to have turnovers to win, but the style of defense they play sets up turnovers from Manning, You pressure him and let him try to force a throw or two. Even without turnovers, if he keeps going down as has been suggested, that will lead to the Colts having to punt and a couple no point possessions or even field goals, may be as good as a turnover.

All of this being said, I do believe it will be a very entertaining ball game. I think both quarterbacks will play well. I think the key to this game will end of being who has more playmakers, and that is the Saints. They have Brees and those receivers, they have Bush and Thomas, and defensively they have Sharper, Vilma, Grant, and Smith. At the end of the day there are to many big time players on the Saints. I like the Saints to win 34 - 28.

Best Super Bowl Ever...

What makes a football game great? Is it lots of offense? Maybe it is all about defense? Maybe the score has to be close? What if it is your team playing in the game? If you are a fan of the Chicago Bears was the '86 Super Bowl against the Patriots a great game (of course not you dominated every area of that game). So with that being said I have began to do some research and try to compile what I believe the 5 best Super Bowl games of all time.
Before I begin, let me tell you some games that did not make my list...

Super Bowl XXXII - Denver 31 v. Green Bay 24
This game is all about John Elway finally getting the monkey off of his back. I am glad he did, I always hoped he would get his ring. However, the game was mostly blah. Great match up of all time great qb's but there is just not much to this game. If not for John Elway's helicopter dive no one would even remember this game.
Super Bowl XXIX - San Francisco 49 v. San Diego 26
There are lots of things to remember. Jerry Rice catching the 44 long touchdown pass on the 3rd play of the game. Ricky Waters following that up with another long td pass from Steve Young (who was on his was to the BEST SUPER BOWL EVER BY A QB).
Super Bowl XXV - New York Giants 20 v. Buffalo Bills 19
This one was hard. I so badly wanted to include this on my list. I will never forget my disappointment as an 11-year old boy when Scott Norwood's kick sailed wide right (little did I know that was just the beginning of nightmares of wide right that I would experience as a Florida State fan - but that's off the point). I was so sure that the Bills were going to win this ball game. However, when this game is talked about, the 1st thing mentioned is the national anthem. Whitney Houston died an amazing rendition of our National Anthem, but if that trumps the game, it is not a top 5 game all time.
THE TOP 5 GAMES IN THE HISTORY OF THE SUPER BOWL...
5. Super Bowl XXXVI
New England Patriots 20 v. St. Louis Rams 17
This was the Super Bowl following the attacks on September 11. This was the team who was so unknown they would not even be introduced individually. This was the team with a second year qb who should not have been starting b/c everyone knows you do not lose your job to injuries. They were facing the explosive high powered Rams, "The greatest show on turf". The Pats played their game Ball control, smothering aggressive defense and this kid played not to make mistakes. Who will ever forget as Tom Brady marched on the field with just over a minute left on the clock, the great John Madden says "I would just take a knee a play for overtime." That is exactly what the conservative Bill Bellichick will do, but wait they are throwing the ball and next thing you know the kid has put them in a position for the best clutch kicker in the history of the NFL to win them a Super Bowl, and that's just what he did. People thought going into that game, we were in the middle of the next great dynasty and they were right. Who would've thought the dynasty was the Patriots.
4. Super Bowl XLII
New York Giants 17 v. New England Patriots 14
The UNDEFEATED Patriots. Talk about a formality they had already beaten this team once. They were rolling offensively. The GREAT Tom Brady at qb. This was just a footnote on the way to history, the only problem was nobody told that to the New York Giants. They came to Arizona hearing about the Patriots greatness, the greatest ever. In what is one of the most impressive performances by a unit the Giants defense completely shut down the high power offense. Late in the 4th quarter with the game on the line, it was Eli Manning who lead his team down the field for the victory. Putting a very bad taste on what was possibly the greatest regular season ever.
3. Super Bowl XXIII
San Francisco 49ers 20 v. Cincinnati Bengals 16
The most exciting Super Bowl for the BEST QUARTERBACK EVER Joe Montana (for now at least). Taking his team down the field for the last 2 minutes is what he did best and this was no exception. This was truly greatness at it's best as he drove his team down the field to another title.
2. Super Bowl XXXIV
St. Louis Rams 23 v. Tennessee Titans 16
The greatest show on turf v. the best defense in the league. Kurt Warner's air game against Eddie George and Steve McNair running the ball. The Titans did a great job of slowing down the high powered offense of the Rams. However, with 1:54 seconds left Kurt Warner hit Isaac Bruce to give the Rams a 7 point lead. Oh well, the Titans played great many thought, but who knew the game was just beginning. McNair moved his team down the field masterfully using timeouts, sidelines, and the exhaustion of the Rams. Now with 6 seconds left and no timeouts the Titans were 10 yards away from the first overtime game in Super Bowl history. Quick Slant to Kevin Dyson, he caught it tie game, but out of nowhere (at least that is the way it seems even I watch it now) Mike Jones makes the tackle and the Titans came up one yard short on the BEST ENDING TO A SUPER BOWL.
1. Super Bowl XXXVIII
New England 32 v. Carolina 29
This game had it all. You love defense, neither team could do anything for the 1st 26 minutes of the game. You love offense, the last 34 minutes put you on the edge of your seat. The Patriots finally scored with 3:55 left in the 1st half and that began a great offensive shoot out. The teams combined for 24 points in the final 3:55 of the 1st half. The 4th quarter saw the most points ever scored in a quarter of the Super Bowl, 37. There were lead changes, ties, and dram at the end. What a great way to end a game. Here is a little known fact about this game, Tom Brady (the great Brady who plays so great in big games), threw 3 picks that allowed the Panthers to get back in this ball game. Of course, he got the job done when it mattered the most.
Please tell me where I am wrong. What did I leave out?
Until next time...

I TOLD YOU SO...

I want you all to go back and read my post on January 28th of this year. I told all of you that Tim Tebow was a TERRIBLE NFL prospect, but you all told me I was wrong. "Look at him, he thinks Tebow will fail." you all laughed and mocked as you cruelly pointed your fingers at me. I became an outcast with all of my friends, my wife told me to stop posting, my brother in law actually told me he would beat me at Madden (that will NEVER happen) with whoever Tebow plays for next year, and WORST OF ALL the person who I hold dearest to my heart (my miniature doberman aka Killer) has not spoken to me since that post.

Finally, someone within the league HAS TO COURAGE TO STAND UP AND SAY IT!!! Let me introduce you to Mr. Uche Nwaneri. He is a 2 year starting guard for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mr. Nwaneri posted something on the JAGUARS OFFICIAL MESSAGE BOARD that caught my attention. He posted The Top 5 Reasons why the Jaguars do not need to draft Tim Tebow, and i am going to give them to you here (the are straight from the horses mouth, so please do not load me down with how bad the spelling and grammar is).

5. He cant throw. PERIOD.
4. He cant read any coverage other than probably cover 2 or man cov. PERIOD (the only cov. in college lol).
3. the QB wildcat WILL NOT WORK IN THIS LEAGUE. PERIOD.
2. He doesnt know how to take a snap from center, nor is he even comfortable enough to.
1. HE CANT THROW. and thats really something you either have or not, never seen a qb who couldnt ever throw, just all of a sudden be able to throw just because hes now in the NFL.

As I read these comments (I posted a link to the article at the bottom of this page), I could not help but think about one thing, UCHE NWANERI HAS TO BE THE DUMBEST HUMAN BEING ON THE PLANET!!! Who comes out and criticizes the guy that his OWNER (also known as the person who signs his check) has openly talked about wanting to employ next year? I tell you who...a guy who will be UNEMPLOYED on April 25 (the Monday after the NFL draft). The Jaguars will draft Tim Tebow! How would you like for your prized possession, the rookie who is going to get ALL OF THE ATTENTION to have to walk into a locker room and have this guy waiting on him. I may agree with the assessment on Tim Tebow. I may think drafting him before the 3rd round is a bad idea, but I will not have to be in that locker room the day he walks in for the first time to meet the team. Lucky for Mr. Nwaneri, neither will he.

Until next time...

BTW. Not that I like to say I told you so, BUT I told you so (there will be many more reports like this to come out between now and the NFL Draft in April).

FINALLY...

It is here!!! Super Bowl XLIV is just days away and I can not wait. This is the date football fans have been looking forward to since last April when their team drafted the missing link from the previous season. The best from the NFC battling the best from he AFC. As the season played itself out, there were many story lines. Brett Favre's retirement (again), Brett Favre's comeback (again), Brady's comeback, the Colts pursuit of perfection, Jim Caldwell's decision to sit starters while pursuing perfection, the amazing playoff run by the Jets, and so many others. Yet as we sit here on the Wednesday before the Super Bowl the most amazing story of the season is the Colts capturing their second Super Bowl, Peyton Manning becoming the greatest quarterback of all time, and the fact that the Colts have completed this season without losing any game that they tried to win (do not get me started on this nonsense - I thought "You played to win the game!" Thanks Herm). Way to go Colts, you had a great season and you are a fine champion.

Wait a minute. They have not won the Super Bowl yet. That's right, there will be another team on the field on Sunday night in South Florida. Oh well, I am sure this is just some meaningless high school team who is just the sacrificial lamb that has to be played as a formality (kinda like the 1st game of an SEC teams schedule). What? The team they are playing had the number one ranked offense this past year? It must have been against some soft schedule. They played the NFC & AFC East (both divisions sent 2 teams to the playoffs) as their non-divisional opponents.

Why is everyone counting these guys out? That is the million dollar question that I can not figure out. When you look at common opponents, New Orleans cruised and easily out played everyone of the common opponents (New England, Miami, Jets, and Bills), while Indy was outplayed against the only 2 of those teams they "played" against (New England and Miami). Consider the teams that gave Indy trouble this season, they could spread them out and throw the ball all over the field, someone please tell me what the strength of the Saints is (my memory is going as I get older). Oh yeah they throw the ball. Look at Peyton Manning's career, he struggles against teams who show one thing and then bring everything else at him. That is exactly what Gregg Williams is going to do...hit him hard and often. Manning in these types of pressure situations struggles because when you take away his greatest strength, and that is the pre-snap read, he is forced to make decisions with guys in his face. I know the Saint were 25th in defense, but we all know when you get a lead in anything you take your foot off of the gas and you coast. This is a defense that gets pressure and creates turn overs and Manning is a qb that turns the ball over when he gets pressured. This is not good for the Colts fans.

So please, allow me to say hold off for just a little while before we make this the greatest team ever. Please hold off before we give Manning the best qb of all time title (he may not even be the best qb of his generation). And please give the Saints a little respect, because it just might be that they are the team who will be fulfilling their destiny on Sunday night in South Florida.

This will be a very entertaining ball game and there are several great match ups and as the week goes along, I will point out some of them. Please keep a check back and please help get this blog noticed.
