One of the many things that I love about sports is the fact that most things sports related are always open to discussions. Who is the best team of all time? Best player of all time? Which team is truly the better team? There are so many factors that go into sports that even when one team beats another, it does not necessarily give us an answer. Let me give you an example, Alabama beat Texas to claim this years National Championship in college football. Does that mean that Alabama is better than Texas just because they won the ballgame? "Of course it does." Texas lost the all time leader in wins in NCAA history on the 5th play of the game. The new quarterback was a true freshman. Does that change your opinion at all? That is neither here nor there because Alabama was the best team over the course of the season (don't try arguing this, I m trying to get to a point). So as you see there are many discussions to made on sports that will never be answered.
THIS ONE THING I KNOW!!!
Tim Tebow will not be a successful NFL quarterback. In fact, drafting Tim Tebow before the third round of the NFL Draft this April should be grounds for IMMEDIATE TERMINATION for any GM (I am really hoping he does great, we need more good guys in positions where they can use their fame to do good). But what a minute, "He is a winner, He knows how to win" you are all saying. Good point, he did win more than he lost while at Florida, however, he was playing with the best of the best athletes in the country, and he was often doing it against guys who were not qualified to be the 2nd string on the team for which he played. Most weeks, the best team Tim Tebow saw was the scout team he worked against in practice.
"But what about the stats he put up in college? Any GM would be crazy to pass on that." Interesting you mention that. Very impressive numbers, he owns the SEC record for most career td's. Scoring touchdowns is what the game is about. However, he was a 67% passer in an offense that was built on short timing routes. His yards are misleading b/c for 2 years he had Percy Harvin and Luis Murphy making short 3 yard slants go for 60 and 70 yards. His senior year, without the explosive play makers, He had his lowest QB Rating, Fewest Interceptions, and Most sacks of his Florida career. But "what about the running ability, He can make things happen with his legs." His numbers look great, but in the NFL there are no Charleston Southern, Troy, or Florida Internationals to play. You will be playing against Ray Lewis, Lamar Woodley, and Patrick Willis...let's just say the punishment he will take week in and week out is a little different at the next level.
Go ahead, I know what you are thinking "He will be HUGE for Ticket sales. You have to sale tickets man." (BTW...thank you to all of you Tebow homers for helping with the research for this column, you know who you are). Tim Tebow has never played in a situation where he has had to take snaps under center, how easy is that to learn? He has never had to deal with making reads while taking a 5 step drop? How easy is that to learn? He has never had to deal with failure CONSISTENTLY, how will he respond? All of these things tell me he will not be very good early on, and if that is the case, Why would people come and watch? He's Tim Tebow. After the 3rd game where he has 3 fumbles b/c he cant take the exchange with the center, 3 sacks b/c he can't find the open guy while he is moving, and a 3 game losing streak, the fans will be calling for whoever the fortunate soul is to be his back up for the 1st few years. "But it's a project you say. We are building towards the future." That is why your teams GM will be fired on Thursday April 22 (draft day as I like to call it). YOU CAN NOT DRAFT A PROJECT IN ROUND ONE!!! You are telling your fans, we expect to not make the playoffs this year. We are accepting failure this year, but wait til next year we will get them then. Great, I will wait til next year to buy my tickets.
Unfortunately, some poor soul will think they are smarter than me (and they are, that's why they are running an NFL Team and I am typing away on a keyboard). However, MARK MY WORDS, whoever ends up making this mistake, the Browns', the Jags, the Lions )why not they took WR's 3 years in a row), or someone else who is destined to fail, will have a MEDIOCRE DRAFT AT BEST!!!
Until next time...
BTW...Next week will be an entire week dedicated to the best of the Super Bowl. Please check back and feel free to post your comments. I look forward to hearing from you.

The Worst of all of the Villians...
“Florida coach Urban Meyer stepping down following Sugar Bowl for health reasons”.
I could not believe my eyes when this text message came from ESPN on Saturday December 27, 2009. Is this really happening? THIS IS HUGE!!! Immediately I got on the phone and placed a couple of calls getting this to anyone who may not have received the message yet. Nothing like this has happened before, not in my lifetime at least. Coaches come and go, but not like this. Not from jobs like this. He was the HEAD COACH at possibly the most dominant school in the country over the last five years. He was 56 – 10 during that time, including 2 National Championships. Then the news came, this is for health reasons. It was reported that it was nothing life threatening…YET. He was quoted as saying “it was self-destructive” referring to the way he was living his life. As a husband and a father of five, I fully understand the value of doing WHATEVER is in the best interest of your family regardless of what others think, say, or write. No amount of money will ever be able to replace daddy in a home. Good for you Urban Meyer. I was truly happy for him. Maybe, I was wrong about his ego. Maybe he was different from ALL of the other coaches.
Then came Sunday afternoon. “Florida head coach will take temporary leave of absence following Sugar Bowl”. Here we go, the egotistical coach is here. I was right about this guy all along. He is in the same group as all of these other guys. He is working some angle to get more money, a better job, better office, whatever it is, this was all for to create attention for himself. This was supposed to be about these kids! This was supposed to be about Tim Tebow’s final collegiate game after what may have been the best career from any player in THE HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!! Thanks Urban, the spotlight is all on you. That afternoon I was glued to the “Sugar Bowl Press Conference” (aka. The Urban Meyer Show). The emotion and concern Meyer seemed to display hooked me again. “Did you see how scared he looked, those doctors must have told him something horrifying” I told all of my buddies. “I know it’s a leave of absence, but he will be gone for at least a season, HE IS SCARED” I bought into him hook, line, and sinker.
Then THE question…
In your gut, do you believe you will be on the sideline on September 5 (the Gators 1st game in 2010)? “I do in my gut believe that will happen”.
How did we go from my lifestyle is “Self Destructive” and therefore I must retire to I think will be on the sidelines for the 1st game in 2010?
Now it comes out that Urban Meyer will be the coach during the annual Spring Game in April. Let me get this straight, the schedule you have is “Self-Destructive” and you need to retire on December 27, and now, LESS THAN ONE MONTH LATER, you will be on the sidelines for the Spring Game. GIVE ME A BREAK!!! Urban Meyer, you should be ashamed of yourself. You took the Sugar Bowl from the Cincinnati Bearcats, who had a GREAT SEASON. That is fine, the attention needs to be about your school, GREAT, put the attention where it belongs, ON YOUR PLAYERS!!!
Way to go Urban, You have managed to have even less class than Lane Kiffin, of course, I am sure the only reason that comment bothers you, is because there is a name other than Urban Meyer being mentioned.
Until Next Time...

It's Time
As I sat in my living room watching the coin flip for overtime of the NFC Title Game I was reminded of a movie I saw while a child, Old Yeller. See this started out as one of my favorite movies as a child. The story told of young boy and his family who adopts a stray dog. The dog is a great friend to the entire family, including Travis who initially rejects the idea of having a dog. This dog was there for the entire family on multiple occasions saving them from raccoons, snakes, bears and eventually a wolf. During this encounter with the wold Yeller gets bitten and becomes exposed to rabies. Yeller becomes a threat to the family that he loves and has protected through so many situations. Old Yeller HAD to be shot!
How does this apply to the NFC Title Game you ask? Last night the old dog who we have all grown to love gave us another example as to why we must take him out back and shoot him. Obviously, I am not literally saying it is time to shoot the man, but I am saying it is time for someone to step up and make the hard decision...BRETT IT IS TIME TO RETIRE!!! Not another I'm retired press conference. You see Brett Favre, like Old Yeller, is a fighter. That's what he does. After the success he had throughout this season Favre, like many of you, are sitting there saying he did more good than bad. But look at the damage he did on one Sunday night in New Orleans. He played OK, but when "the family" needed "Old Yeller" the most, he turned on them and went from being the protector to the one they needed protection from. I am not denying the fact that there is plenty of blame to go around for this loss, However as badly as everyone played the Vikings were sitting there with a chance to win the game in the final seconds when Brett Favre turns into Brett Favre.
I am sorry boys and girls, I know this will be difficult for all of you. I am sorry Brett, you have given us so many wonderful memories ( I will never forget the way you played this game like it was a game in a time where everyone was telling us how this is just a business). But deep down, we all know this has to be done, it is best for everyone. Don't worry, I will do it. Just as young Travis was forced to grow up and become a man at way to early of an age, I will go out back and do what has to be done.
I am sorry Brett, we Love you!!!
BANG!!!

Please Rex, Please
I am a Tom Brady fan. Let's get that much out of the way. I believe he is the best quarterback in the NFL today and arguably one of the best of all time. However, that is being challenged by the smartest FOOTBALL PLAYER in NFL history. Sunday in Indianapolis, Peyton Manning and co. will attempt to punch their ticket to the big game in Miami. Let's all face facts...qb's are judged on postseason success and with another victory in the Super Bowl Peyton Manning may cement himself as the best quarterback ever. I grew up LOVING Joe Montana. I grew up in a home where Favre, Marino, Aikman, Moon were all watched. But none of these guys had the regular season success that Peyton Manning has enjoyed throughout his NFL career. Another Super Bowl and the case for these other guys gets real hard to argue (and I love to argue). So I say...
PLEASE REX PLEASE!!!
Rex Ryan is the one man who controls this whole situation. As much as we want to say this is about Manning and the wideouts against the Defense, IT'S NOT! As much as we want to say this game is about the Colts run d against Jones and Greene, IT'S NOT! This game is not even about Manning and his quest for another ring. THIS GAME IS ALL ABOUT REX RYAN AND BRIAN SCHOTTENHEIMER!!! I am begging you come out aggressive. Allow your quarterback to take some chances early on in the game against that aggressive defense, who is keyed in on the run & is very confident after their dominating game against the Ravens. If the Jets will have any chance at winning this game on Sunday, they must be aggressive early on throwing the ball. I would go play - action deep on the 1st snap from scrimmage. Maybe you complete it (you talk about a momentum swing early). Maybe you don't complete it, but the db's will have no choice but acknowledge that for the rest of the game. The best chance the Jets have is to think outside of the box early. YES, this game will have to be won for the Jets by using their strength & that is Jones, Greene, and that defense. However, we all know that Sanchez will be required to make 4 to 6 throws that will greatly impact the game, the beginning of the game is as good a time as any.
So please Rex for your team, their fans, and most importantly...FOR TOM BRADY, Please be aggressive on BOTH sides of the ball this Sunday.
Until next time, this is just a thought.
BTW Rex...I hear the food is great in Miami.
